This fall, volunteers from Keurig Dr. Pepper, Columbia Distributing, SOAR Academy and the community joined KaBOOM! at the Destiny Middle School campus to transform an empty site into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours for the students of SOAR Academy, which is now located on Destiny’s campus.

Why Play?

According to research from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), healthy lifestyle habits formed through play, including physical activity, can lower the risk of obesity and its associated health issues. While play is important to a child’s physical, emotional, social and intellectual development, research shows kids are becoming more sedentary and not getting the activity they need. That’s why partnering with organizations like Let’s Play, KaBOOM! And Keurig Dr Pepper are vital to creating safe and inspiring “PLAYces” for Tacoma kids to learn, explore, and grow.

The playground build was made possible by the partnership between KaBOOM! and Let’s Play, an initiative by Keurig Dr. Pepper to provide the funding, equipment and play spaces that help students and families make active play a daily priority. The build culminated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the newly built playground and making more play the easy choice for students and families in Tacoma.
