Meet our Green Dot Growth All Stars!

Blog Image@2x

Chad is a 12th grader at Green Dot’s Ánimo City of Champions High School in Los Angeles. Chad radiates kindness — he won’t tell you who his best friend is, instead he casually shares that he is friends with everyone on campus. To bring everyone together around his favorite hobby, he is starting a book club at his school. When Chad entered the 9th grade, he was reading at a 3rd grade level.  After only 3.5 years at Ánimo City of Champions, he is now reading close to a 10th grade level - achieving a pace 7x what he had been achieving prior to Green Dot. Expectations are a powerful force. Chad can now choose a future worthy of his passions and talents. He is an All Star!

Students thrive in Green Dot schools. Each arrives at our middle or high schools, full of the energy and creativity of youth, but often accompanied by a data anomaly that doesn’t remotely fit: they are multiple grades behind and chance of college and a successful career is slipping away. They have been promoted learning half a grade or less each year. At Green Dot, everything changes. Anonymity is banished within a Green Lens of care, support, and unlimited expectations. Students become Growth All Stars, achieving multiple grades of learning each year at their schools.

This holiday season we will introduce you to Growth All Stars, like Chad but different - boys, girls, high schoolers, middle schoolers - all hitting it out of the park! There are 14,000 more Green Lens stories beyond these, each one unique and remarkable. Please put your energy behind them. GIVE what you can this holiday season and support All Star achievement.

Brooke, a Growth All Star who aspires to be a journalist

Brooke is a 12th grader at Ánimo City of Champions High School in Los Angeles, who aspires to become a journalist or an author when she finishes her education. She wants to take people on a journey through her writing, just like her favorite authors do for her (her ultimate favorite author is Colleen Hoover). She credits her best friend Asia for introducing her to books that made her love reading. She describes her favorite books as “movies, but you can hold them in your hands.

Chad, Growth All Star who wants to be a voice actor

Chad is a 12th grader at Ánimo City of Champions High School in Los Angeles, CA. Even though he is quiet when you first meet him, once he opens up, he is very sociable. He will tell you proudly that he is friends with everyone on campus. He credits this to his efforts to be kind to everyone he meets. He aspires to go to college, study theater, and ultimately become a voice actor. He’s fascinated by the ability of voice actors to convey so much depth and emotion through their voice alone. In his spare time, he enjoys reading graphic novels, and leads the Anime club at his school.

Meet Michelle, a TN Green Dot All Star

Michelle is an eighth grade student at Wooddale Middle School in Memphis, Tennessee who has already set her sights on becoming an obstetrician. She also loves kids and cannot wait for her new brother that is on the way. In her free time, Michelle’s favorite thing to do is spend quality time with her loved ones, whether it’s a girl's night with her best friends (probably watching a Cinderella movie) or a trip with her mother, who describes her as dedicated to learning as much as possible in and out of school.

David’s work ethic paved the way for progress in reading

David is an 8th grader at Martin Luther King Middle School in Beaumont, Texas.

He is a dedicated student, both in school and in life. He is fascinated by construction, and when his Dad started the major project of building their family home, he helped build a quarter of their house.

Reading made her magic in this MLK Middle School All Star

Haylee is an 8th grade student at Martin Luther King Middle School in Beaumont, Texas. She has a love for reading and travel, and allows her reading to transport her to different worlds.

When Green Dot assumed operational control of Haylee’s school, she was reading at a 2nd grade level. In just one year at Green Dot, she has grown over 3.5 grade levels in reading! A passion was sparked when she met her Language Arts teacher, Ms. Johnson. Through her perseverance and Ms. Johnsons mentorship, Haylee is on track for success in college leadership and life.
