Writing: ‘Mi Lindo Veracruz’ by Guadalupe Cauich

This piece placed third for middle school writing submissions in the 2024 Ánimo Voices WRITING, ART, & SPOKEN WORD COMPETITION 2024, which invited students to respond to a open prompt. The competition is an opportunity to motivate, recognize, and celebrate our strong student voices through writing, spoken word, and art.

Mi Lindo Veracruz

Veracruz, where my dad is from,
The unbearable heat,
Puerto de Veracruz, where the ocean meets the sun
What a treat!

My grandma can speak dialect, very awesome and rare
Not many can do it
Not many will care

Another great thing of this beautiful scene,
The ripe, juicy, sweet, fruits
And all the green

La comida
Las delicias del mar
Y tamales, tlayudas, carne chinameca,
Unas de muchas comidas que podria mencionar

Marimba, the instrument played with their hands,
Music, beautiful and tuneful
Son Jarocho, the dance of these lands
Lively, energetic, and joyful

Many artists and singers come from there,
Rich talent, inspired by their culture,
A joy they were happy to share

This is where my Dad is from,
Veracruz,
Mi Lindo Veracruz
