This Juneteenth, we showcase African American student Aspirations

African American achievement cannot be effectively celebrated without also recognizing African-American aspirations. As we observe Juneteenth this year, we hear from students across our network of schools share their aspirations, “Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can be a…”

This initiative tells educators that barriers will not interfere with their dreams, which include opening their own businesses, becoming doctors, engineers, and first responders, among other careers.

Among the goals that the students shared were:

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can be a part of a team that saves lives (radiologist)

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can be a first responder and a fighter who saves lives.

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can manage multiple franchises.

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can use my skills to create and solve problems

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can develop digital games

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can by contributing to my family legacy of service I will be a registered nurse

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can use my imagination to entertain (script writer)

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can help others on a path of wellness

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can be a wide receiver in the NFL

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can be a veterinarian and help animals.

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can be an engineer and rebuild this country.

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can use my imagination to entertain the world through animation.

Today I’m a learner so tomorrow I can create and manage my own business.

Last March, Green Dot Public Schools convened over 1,000 educators from across Los Angeles for the 4th annual Legacy Conference. The event is meant to help dismantle systematic barriers that drive deficit-based thinking about students of color and hinder their growth and success. Dr. Jerell B. Hill, Dean of Education at Pacific Oaks College, was the keynote speaker. The Conference also recognized dozens of educators, faculty, administrators, and community leaders for their compromise to move the students closer to the dreams of equality, freedom, and justice for all.

At Green Dot Public Schools, our mission is to transform public education, so all students graduate prepared for college, leadership and life.
